Saginaw News

Back in those less technologically savvy years of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s we would receive the Saginaw News in either the fall or the spring as a zhotz against the off-season blues or to fire up our interest for the next camp season.  It recounted the highlights of the previous summer escapades at Saginaw including trips, musicals, special events, award winners, and even some birthday reminders.

1954 Saginaw News Golf
1954: Learning golf on Upper Field….was no Merion or Oakmont.  In the top photos (L/R)- Neal Abrams (counselor), Marty Gotewitz, Bobby Kline, ?, Sighie Samuelson, ?, Joe Gimbel, Barry Greene, Chuck Fradkin (counselor), and Sam Zurwitz

The production value was in the bottom quarter of the creative spectrum but heck, this was the 1960’s and 70’s….the desktop publishing industry was not even a figment of people’s imaginations at that time.

In a refreshing sort of way the arrival of this black and white newsletter on a grey fall or winter day was a life rope dangling in front of us.  With a little willful suspension of disbelief we could convince ourselves that the bright camp days of summer were not that far behind us or that far into the future.

So if you are from this era peruse a couple of archival issues….you will recognize the names and the events…..they are bound to bring a smile to your face.
