Hill-IJ and Acropolis-IJ Games 2016

The annual Hill-IJ and Acropolis-IJ games are a focal point of the summer for the Senior Camps.  It has become an all-day alumni celebration as campers and counselors from the not-to-distant and distant pasts return to share the game-time thrills and renew relationships with Saginaw friends.

For both the Hill and Acropolis the build-up for these annual grudge matches against teams from the Inter-Junior Camps is serious business.  New uniforms, new banners, and new cheers are all part of the script and the final act is hopefully another dominating win for both teams.

Much like the Hillmen, the Acropolis minions march across upper field singing and chanting in unison the praises of their squad.  There is even an exalted throne for Hera their fearless leader.

Part of the pageantry is the introduction of the starting line-ups.

Once the action starts there is rabid fan support for the Acropolis Doves in a full color spectacle of a game.

A big part of this day is to welcome returning Alumni who come to hang out with old friends and relive the thrill of supporting the Hawks and the Doves.

How about this for a full circle connection with the deeper past.  Shirley Chalick with her granddaughter Emmie Kaplan (the beautiful likeness is undeniable).  I remember when Emmie’s mother Beth was prowling about the Saginaw campus in the late 1960’s.

The Zeus 1 on the back of Emmie’s throwback jersey ties us back to her grandfather Connie who was the first to sit on that throne in 1957.

For the Hill Hawks prep for the Hill-IJ Game goes on from the first week of camp but ramps rapidly the last week as the game approaches.  There are marches to the Mess Hall to state their case to the IJ through songs way older then they are:

Victory’s our byword

As our voices is lifted skyward

Sing as we take our colors ever onward

Sing as our voices ever grow

Sing let them hear us

Every enemy will fear us

Fight for the banner that is dearest to you

Fight for the banner of the Hill

Line up to march and sing

And banners to unfurl representing each year’s support for the principles of The Hill-Loyalty, Sportsmanship, Class, and Victory.

Hill Banners Gather

Preceding the game the team and the Hillmen prepare for their grand entrance march in the traditional “H” formation.

One more tradition to respect, this year’s Hillman of Honor, Jake Silverstein, assumes his duty as the official game scorekeeper.

    1. I do too and I was not real happy about it because I was the losing pitcher. That’s OK we came back and beat them In 74 and 75. In 1976 the IJ rode in on a Limo. Remember that? I think u were still there. I was just up at Saginaw this weekend during visitation which got me reading Hill-IJ posts and ran into yours.
